Police Investigate Whether Boat Collision Involved Negligence or Dangerous Operation

Johor police are investigating whether negligence or dangerous handling contributed to a collision between two boats near Kuala Sungai Mersing that killed two people.

Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said investigators would check whether both operators had valid service permits and followed licensing conditions and standard operating procedures. Police will also take statements from people involved, including the first security personnel to reach the scene.

The dead were identified as the 38-year-old operator of the Sea Queen and a 32-year-old Chinese male passenger. The collision occurred about 800 meters from Sungai Mersing Jetty as the Sea Queen returned from Pulau Besar and the Rawa Birds headed toward Pulau Rawa.

The Sea Queen carried six people, while three were aboard the Rawa Birds. The collision killed both victims at the scene. Seven others suffered injuries, with three treated at Mersing Hospital, three sent to Sultan Ismail Hospital and one taken to Pasir Gudang Hospital.

Police are investigating the case under provisions covering death caused by negligence and dangerous boat operation, as well as a sudden-death report. Ab Rahaman said the incident had only recently occurred and that investigators needed time to complete their work.
