Police invite VeryDarkMan over officers' kidnap link claim

Nigeria's police force has officially invited social media activist Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, to present evidence supporting his serious allegations against police officers. Otse claimed that officers stationed at checkpoints collaborate with kidnappers and bandits by identifying wealthy travelers and transmitting their movements to criminal syndicates for abduction and ransom.

The Nigeria Police Force firmly rejects these allegations as unsubstantiated and unfairly damaging to an institution entrusted with the protection of millions of Nigerians. Allegations of this gravity demand a corresponding standard of evidence, and that standard has not yet been met.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, stated that the police have noted Otse's comments made during a recent Nigerian Bar Association conference. The police firmly reject these claims, labeling them as unsubstantiated and unfairly damaging to an institution tasked with protecting millions of Nigerians. The statement emphasized that allegations of such gravity require a commensurate standard of proof, which has not yet been met.

Consequently, the Nigeria Police Force has formally invited Otse to "produce, without delay, the evidence upon which he based these serious allegations." The force assured that any evidence provided would be treated with urgency and investigated thoroughly. It also urged the public to come forward with credible evidence of police misconduct through appropriate channels, rather than relying solely on public pronouncements.

Accordingly, the Nigeria Police Force hereby invites Mr Martins Vincent Otse to produce, without delay, the evidence upon which he based these serious allegations, including any evidence that police personnel at checkpoints identify wealthy individuals and subsequently transmit information about them to kidnappers for the purpose of facilitating their abduction.

The police maintained that officers deployed to checkpoints nationwide are assigned to prevent crime, detect criminal activities, and protect citizens. They highlighted that police personnel frequently confront criminal elements, often suffering attacks and casualties in the process. The statement cautioned against broad accusations that could demoralize officers and erode public trust, asserting that the sacrifices and integrity of the institution would not be diminished by unverified claims. Any individual officers found to have compromised their duties will face disciplinary measures and legal prosecution.
