Police officer arrested for falsifying missing person case closure

A police officer in Jeju, South Korea, faces charges for allegedly fabricating evidence to prematurely close a missing person case. The officer, identified as Officer Boo of the Jeju Western Police Station's missing persons investigation team, is accused of falsely reporting contact with a woman in her 30s, whose body was later discovered after she had been missing.

Records indicate that shortly after the missing person report was filed on May 15, Officer Boo accessed the victim's mobile phone location data seven times between 7:08 PM and 8:55 PM. Despite this access, and without any actual contact, the officer proceeded to close the case in the 112 system at 9:16 PM, falsely stating he had spoken with the missing woman. The case was subsequently deleted from the missing persons profiling system under the reason 'traffic accident death'.

This is not an isolated incident, as Officer Boo is also suspected of similar actions in another case involving a man in his 60s, who was found dead 51 days after being reported missing. In that instance, the officer allegedly used a false phone number while falsely reporting the man was safe, leading to the case's closure.

While Officer Boo has partially admitted to some charges, including lying about speaking with the missing woman, the underlying motive for his alleged actions remains undisclosed. Speculation among colleagues ranges from excessive workload to performance pressure, though his case closure rate does not appear unusually high compared to others on the team. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has deployed profilers to investigate the officer's motives further.
