Police officer detained in Peru over child's death during intervention

A sub-lieutenant in the National Police of Peru (PNP) has been arrested and is being investigated for the alleged fatal shooting of an 8-year-old boy during a police operation in Huacho. The Public Ministry confirmed the detention and the ongoing investigation into the officer, identified as Luis Nazario Chumbes, for suspected culpable homicide.

The minor reportedly died after the police intervention in Huacho, a coastal city approximately 140 kilometers north of Lima. According to the Public Ministry, the officer was detained in flagrante delicto and is accused of causing the victim's death with a firearm. The prosecutor's office has ordered the seizure of the weapon for ballistic analysis and an atomic absorption test.

The incident reportedly began when the mototaxi, carrying the child and his mother, was involved in an accident, leading to an altercation with police officers.

Investigators are gathering further evidence, including statements from officers involved in the intervention, recordings from area surveillance cameras, and video footage captured by witnesses. The Public Ministry is coordinating with the Institute of Legal Medicine in Lima to conduct a necropsy to definitively establish the cause of death and clarify the events surrounding the tragic incident.
