Police officer donates 1.12 million won to mark 112nd blood donation

A South Korean police officer has combined his dedication to blood donation with a significant act of charity, donating 1.12 million won (approximately $800 USD) to help those in need. Officer Bae Kang-woo, from the Namdaemun Police Station in Seoul, made the donation to the Korean Red Cross, marking his 112th blood donation.

The symbolic amount of 1.12 million won was chosen to align with the number 112, which is South Korea's emergency reporting number. Bae's commitment to blood donation began in 1996 when a family member was battling cancer and required transfusions. Since then, he has consistently donated blood for three decades.

Bae's efforts have inspired his colleagues. In 2020, he founded a blood donation club within the police station called 'Love's Honeybee' to encourage more officers to participate. The club also collects blood donation certificates from the community, which are then donated to the Red Cross and the Korea Leukemia-Lymphoma Society.

"I've felt that even small acts of sharing can be a necessary help to someone," Bae stated. "I will continue to donate blood and share as long as my health allows." The Korean Red Cross has pledged to use the funds for neighbors facing difficulties due to disasters, illness, or economic hardship.
