Police Officer Killed in Armed Attack While Responding to Domestic Dispute in Turkey

A police officer has been killed in Muğla, Turkey, after responding to a domestic disturbance that escalated into a violent armed attack. The incident occurred late Tuesday evening in the Menteşe district.

Officer Tayfun Baş, 32, was fatally wounded when the suspect, identified as Gökhan Y., allegedly fired shots. The suspect reportedly went to the residence of his ex-wife, Hande S., leading to an argument. Hande S. reportedly used the KADES domestic violence alert app to call for help. Upon the arrival of police, Gökhan Y. allegedly drew a firearm and shot both Hande S. and Officer Baş.

Both Hande S. and Gökhan Y. were transported to hospitals for treatment. Officer Baş was taken to Menteşe State Hospital, where he tragically died despite medical efforts. Hande S. was taken to Muğla Training and Research Hospital. The suspect also reportedly attempted suicide by shooting himself and is receiving treatment.

Officer Tayfun Baş, a married father of two, was reportedly expecting his second child just 15 days prior to the incident. His funeral will be held in Denizli, the hometown of his wife, who is also a police officer. A Turkish flag was hung at his father's home in Aydın's İncirliova district.
