Police: Rioters, not protesters, caused damage and arson after demo

Jakarta police have identified a group of rioters as responsible for the acts of vandalism and arson that occurred following a demonstration at the Gedung MPR/DPR (People's Consultative Assembly/House of Representatives) building on Thursday night. The initial protest, organized by the Alliance of United Pati People (AMPB), had reportedly dispersed peacefully.

However, police spokesperson Kombes Budi Hermanto explained that the situation escalated when another group arrived, leading to increased tensions. This group then allegedly attempted to damage the main gate of the MPR/DPR building and set fire to it.

"It was the act of a group of rioters or public order disruptors," Hermanto stated on Friday. He added that police officers had warned the crowd to maintain order and refrain from destructive actions. After 6:00 PM, officers attempted to disperse the crowd using persuasive methods.
