Polish court awards compensation for botched hair treatment

A Polish court has awarded a woman 14,000 PLN (approximately $3,500 USD) in damages after a routine hair bleaching treatment at a familiar salon resulted in severe damage. The client, who had previously trusted the hairdresser, experienced a "catastrophe" when a different method was used, leading to her hair being burned.

The salon's insurer attempted to shift blame, suggesting the client's vacation to a warm climate contributed to the hair's condition. However, a court-appointed expert's opinion, while unable to definitively quantify any impact from sun or saltwater, confirmed that the improperly performed procedure was the undeniable cause of the damage.

The court recognized the profound psychological and social impact of the incident. It highlighted that hair is a significant symbol of femininity and self-expression, crucial for a person's well-being. The damage led to the client experiencing negative emotions and withdrawing from social activities, affecting her self-esteem for two years as she underwent treatment to restore her hair. The court also noted her profession as a nurse, which involved constant interaction with people who would notice the visible changes in her appearance.
