Polish F-16s Intercept Russian Reconnaissance Plane Near Coast

Polish F-16 fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft on Monday over the Baltic Sea, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Poland's coast. The Russian military aircraft was flying in international airspace when it was detected and identified by two Polish Air Force jets.

Poland's Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported the incident, emphasizing that the Russian plane did not violate Polish airspace. He noted that the Il-20 was flying without a flight plan and had its transponder turned off, necessitating a visual identification. "The Polish Armed Forces are constantly monitoring the situation and taking action to protect the country's borders," the minister stated on social media.

This is the second such interception in just a few days, following a similar encounter where Polish F-16s intercepted another Russian Il-20 approximately 40 kilometers north of Kołobrzeg. Such flights by Russian military aircraft near NATO member states' borders have become increasingly common since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

These incursions often occur without flight plans and with transponders deactivated, prompting NATO countries, including Poland, to regularly scramble fighter jets for identification and monitoring. The situation in the Baltic region remains tense, further exacerbated by a recent incident where a Russian cruise missile briefly entered Polish airspace.
