Polish jets intercept Russian spy plane over Baltic Sea for third time in days

Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea for the third time in three days, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region. The Polish Ministry of Defense announced that a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane was detected approximately 56 kilometers northeast of the coastal city of Koszalin.

Two Polish fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the aircraft, escorting it away from Polish airspace. The ministry confirmed that Polish airspace was not violated during the incident. This repeated interception underscores the heightened military activity and surveillance near NATO's borders.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz described the Russian actions as provocative, stating that Russia is testing the vigilance and operational readiness of NATO's defense systems. Warsaw has noted an increase in Russian reconnaissance flights along its coast, a NATO member, in recent times. Similar interceptions of Russian reconnaissance planes over the Baltic have occurred frequently, with Polish pilots reporting visual contact with the Russian crews during some encounters.

Poland and other Baltic states are concerned that Russia, under pressure from the war in Ukraine, may escalate provocations against NATO members. The increased frequency of reconnaissance flights is seen as part of this potential escalation strategy, aimed at probing and challenging the alliance's defenses.
