Polish village puts faith in Europe's tallest Mary statue

Residents of the Polish village of Konotopie are anticipating the completion of a colossal statue of the Virgin Mary, which, at 55 meters, will be the tallest in Europe and second globally. The ambitious project is being financed by Roman Karkosik, a wealthy Polish billionaire.

Security guard Andrzej noted the steady stream of coach buses arriving at the site, indicating significant public interest, driven by faith or curiosity. The estimated cost of the statue is 100 million zlotys (approximately €22.85 million).

They argue that the substantial investment could be better allocated to social welfare projects, such as hospitals or orphanages, rather than adding to the country's already numerous religious monuments. Officials, however, are optimistic about the statue's potential economic impact. Renata Golebiewska, mayor of Kikol, believes the project offers a chance for regional growth and job creation.
