Politician Denies 'Baseless Speculation' Over Presidential Fund Cut Controversy

A political dispute has erupted in Taiwan over the recent decision by the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP) to cut NT$30 million from the president's special fund. This move has reportedly led to the cancellation of 15,000 Mid-Autumn Festival gift boxes intended for 37 organizations supporting disabled individuals and sheltered workshops. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) New Taipei City Councilor Chang Chia-ling alleged that during a political talk show, KMT Legislator Lin Pei-hsiang and TPP former legislator Chang Chi-kai heavily criticized TPP Legislator Weng Hsiao-ling for the budget cut. Lin Pei-hsiang has vehemently denied these claims, calling them "baseless speculation" and "political maneuvering to insert oneself into the situation." He stated that he maintains good relations with Weng Hsiao-ling and even assisted Chang Chi-kai's election campaign. Lin expressed confusion over Chang Chia-ling's accusations, suggesting it was an attempt to gain attention. He emphasized the KMT's commitment to supporting vulnerable groups and promoting economic circulation, particularly during the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival. Lin criticized the tactic of linking the sheltered workshops to the special fund, deeming it "vile" and a way to deflect responsibility by targeting less sensitive areas. He lamented that the Presidential Office's immediate mention of the workshops was regrettable, as it appeared to weaponize vulnerable populations for political gain, causing discomfort not only among KMT legislators but also among many others nationwide.
