Politicians Facing Corruption Allegations Meet in Taitung

Hsinchu Mayor Kao Hung-an visited Taitung on Tuesday, joining County Speaker Wu Hsiu-hua amidst ongoing corruption investigations that have cast a shadow over both politicians. Kao, currently appealing a corruption case involving her former aides' expense claims, met with Wu, whose family's resort business is embroiled in a controversy over alleged favoritism by county officials. Kao, speaking as someone who has navigated similar legal challenges, offered words of encouragement to Wu. She emphasized the need for public figures to "never forget their original intentions" and remain focused on serving the public. Kao stated that while legal processes take time, individuals should not be judged prematurely. She highlighted the importance of looking at a politician's long-term service record and dedication. During the visit, Kao praised Wu's contributions as speaker, noting her collaboration with the county government and her efforts in local governance, budget oversight, and industry promotion. The meeting, which took place at the Taitung Expo, a slow-living and sustainability-themed exhibition, added a layer of political intrigue to the event. Wu, in turn, thanked Kao for her visit and expressed a desire for future exchanges between their cities. She deflected direct questions about her own controversies, redirecting the focus to the expo and inter-city cooperation. The two women sealed their meeting with a pinky promise to connect again after their respective elections, Kao for Hsinchu mayor and Wu for Taitung county magistrate.
