Poll: Only 1 in 3 Americans back Iran war, nearly 70% say Trump unclear on goals

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals dwindling American support for military action against Iran, with only about a third of respondents backing the war. This marks the lowest approval since the conflict's inception five months prior. A significant majority, 69%, including 40% of Republicans, feel President Trump has failed to articulate clear objectives for the U.S. military's involvement.

Support for the conflict has consistently stayed below 40% since U.S. and Israeli forces launched attacks on February 28. This contrasts sharply with the initial public backing for recent major U.S. military engagements. For instance, the Iraq War (2003-2011) garnered about 70% support at its outset, while the Afghanistan War (2001-2021) enjoyed nearly 90% initial approval, according to Gallup polls.

The poll also indicated that among registered independent voters, 36% favor Democratic congressional candidates, compared to 20% who support Republican candidates. Independent voters also lean towards the Democratic Party on economic policy issues. The Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,246 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
