Poll shows DPP candidate Su Chiao-hui overtaking KMT's Li Chih-chiang in New Taipei mayoral race

A recent media poll has revealed a significant shift in the New Taipei mayoral election, with Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Su Chiao-hui now leading Kuomintang (KMT) candidate Li Chih-chiang. This development, described as a "golden cross," suggests a tightening race and a potential change in the city's political landscape.

According to the poll, Su Chiao-hui holds a 5.6 percentage point lead over Li Chih-chiang, with 37.8% support compared to Li's 32.2%. A notable 44.9% of New Taipei residents expressed agreement with the idea of "trying a different party in charge," indicating a considerable appetite for change.

Writer Sun Wei-mang analyzed the poll results, highlighting Su Chiao-hui's advantage across multiple age demographics. She leads significantly among those aged 30-39, 40-49, and over 60. While she trails slightly in the 50-59 age bracket, this broad support is seen as her strongest asset and a difficult challenge for Li Chih-chiang to overcome.

Despite the KMT's traditional strength in certain districts, the poll also identified areas where Su Chiao-hui is making inroads. While Li Chih-chiang maintains leads in traditionally KMT-leaning areas like Yonghe, Tamsui, Xizhi, and Xindian, Su's performance across different age groups suggests a broader appeal. The analysis also noted that even with controversies surrounding KMT figures, the party's core supporters remain steadfast.
