Pope Leo XIV to return to Peru: Chiclayo and Cusco prepare with faith and hope for the pontiff's 'homecoming'

Pope Leo XIV's upcoming visit to Peru from November 11-17, 2026, has sparked widespread excitement and devotion among the faithful. The pontiff is scheduled to visit four cities: Lima, Pucallpa, Chiclayo, and Cusco. The announcement has been met with particular enthusiasm in Chiclayo and Cusco, two of the designated stops.

Chiclayo holds a special significance as Pope Leo XIV served as its bishop for many years before his election to the papacy. Residents like Teresa Vascio García expressed deep joy, recalling him as a humble and caring pastor. "I am happy above all because he was our bishop," she said, noting that local religious communities are already preparing for his arrival.

Elmes Fernández, a member of the Catholic Church in Chiclayo, emphasized the unique nature of this visit. "Not only is a pope visiting for the first time, but it is a pope who returns from where he started," he stated. Fernández also highlighted the pontiff's reputation for approachability and his ability to listen.

Beyond the spiritual significance, some, like Marlene Castellano Saliaga from Lima visiting Chiclayo, anticipate a positive economic impact. "It's incredible to know that it will generate great tourism, in addition to his visit to Peru," she remarked. Castellano also sees the visit as a powerful symbol of unity, stating, "The Pope is what he transmits: the union between families, people, and the healing that people seek through prayer."
