Pope Leo XIV to Visit Peru in November 2026, President Confirms

Peruvian President José María Balcázar announced that Pope Leo XIV will visit the country in the first half of November 2026. The head of state confirmed the news after a private audience with the pontiff in the Vatican on June 18.

The Pope is scheduled to travel to various regions, including coastal, highland, and jungle areas, during a stay expected to last between 8 and 10 days. His itinerary includes an initial stop in Lima, followed by Chiclayo in Lambayeque, with potential visits to the Quechua-speaking communities of Incahuasi and Cañaris. The pontiff is also expected to visit Piura, Sullana, Cusco, and Pucallpa in the Amazon. President Balcázar mentioned that visits to Puno and Iquitos are possible, pending logistical and security evaluations by the Vatican's specialized office.

The last papal visit to Peru occurred in January 2018 when Pope Francis visited Lima, Puerto Maldonado, and Trujillo. The upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV, whose birth name is Robert Francis Prevost Martínez, is generating particular interest due to his significant pastoral history in northern Peru, beginning in 1985. He publicly recalled Chiclayo in his first message from the Vatican after his election, expressing gratitude for the support and faith of the people who accompanied him during his ministry.
