Portuguese president calls for 'rapid' investigation into Interior Minister

Portugal's President António José Seguro has called for a rapid advancement of investigations concerning Interior Minister Luís Neves, who has faced multiple controversies in recent weeks. The President expressed his close attention to the unfolding events.

Recent Portuguese press reports have implicated Neves in further scandals. One report suggests the Interior Minister drove a vehicle confiscated by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ), the same police body he previously led. The Public Prosecutor's Office is also investigating a separate case from July, where a trailer seized in a drug trafficking operation was allegedly used by a businessman known to Neves.

Neves had previously defended the trailer's use, stating it was a cost-saving measure for the state. The same businessman is reportedly linked to another controversy involving Neves regarding home renovations. President Seguro stressed his deep respect for institutional roles and constitutional responsibilities, stating his desire for all involved to fulfill their duties.

"And I also wish for something else: that the consultations, audits, and investigations that are being carried out advance as quickly as possible so that we can understand the details," Seguro told reporters after an event in Viana do Castelo. He emphasized that while respecting institutional competencies, he wants clarity on the matters involving the Interior Minister.
