Power is temporary, ex-governor Jang tells politicians

Senator Jonah Jang, former governor of Plateau State, delivered a stark message to Nigeria's political elite and citizens during his 80th birthday celebration: political power is fleeting. Speaking at the public presentation of his autobiography, "From Airman to Politics," in Jos, Jang reflected on his eight decades, emphasizing that character, faith, and service to humanity are what truly endure beyond temporary positions, fading fame, and unsatisfying wealth.

"Positions come and go; power is temporary; fame fades; wealth cannot satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart," Jang stated. He urged politicians and public officeholders to prioritize leaving a legacy of integrity and selfless service over the relentless pursuit of office and material possessions. He also encouraged young Nigerians to embrace faith, asserting that worldly success alone does not guarantee fulfillment and that the ultimate goal should be an eternal relationship with Christ.

The former governor explained that his autobiography was written at the persistent urging of his son, Yakubu, to document his experiences for future generations. Jang clarified that the book is intended to offer an accurate portrayal of his public life and address the misconceptions and controversies that have sometimes surrounded his decisions. "This book is not written to settle scores or attack anyone," he said. "Rather, it is an honest effort to place events in their proper context, explain the circumstances under which certain decisions were taken and present the facts as I experienced them."

During the event, Jang expressed gratitude to key figures who influenced his public service career. He specifically thanked former military President General Ibrahim Babangida for appointing him Military Governor of Benue and Gongola states, an opportunity he credits with shaping his path. He also acknowledged former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan for their support during his time as governor of Plateau State.
