Power shift in Misiones: Passalacqua's rise ends Rovira's era

A significant political realignment is underway in Argentina's Misiones province, marking the end of an era dominated by Carlos Rovira and the consolidation of power under Governor Hugo Passalacqua. A new legislative bloc, 'Movimiento por lo que Viene,' comprising 17 deputies out of 40 in the unicameral legislature, has formally declared its support for Passalacqua, signaling a new political landscape.

Passalacqua, a 68-year-old former university professor and chemical engineer, is now positioned to govern with legislative backing, including the upcoming debate on the 2027 budget.

Passalacqua, who has served two non-consecutive terms as governor (2015 and 2023), has demonstrated a calculated approach to asserting autonomy. Unlike his predecessor Oscar Herrera Ahuad, who carefully avoided antagonizing Rovira, Passalacqua began making independent gestures early in his second mandate.
