Prabowo offers condolences on passing of Thai Princess Bajrakitiyabha

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto conveyed his profound condolences to Thailand following the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha. He extended his sympathies to the Royal Family and the Thai people during a bilateral meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta.

"I want to convey my deepest condolences, on behalf of Indonesia and on behalf of myself, to the Royal Family and the people of Thailand on the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha," President Prabowo stated. The Princess, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, passed away in June 2026 at the age of 47. She had been in a coma for nearly three years prior to her death. The Princess was recognized as a distinguished legal expert, holding two postgraduate degrees from Cornell University, and had a notable career as a prosecutor and Chief of Staff of the King's Personal Security Guard Command with the rank of general.

In a reciprocal gesture, Thai Prime Minister Anutin also expressed his condolences to Indonesia. His sympathy followed a maritime incident involving the passenger ship Mutiara Sentosa II, which caught fire in Sumenep waters, East Java, while en route from Surabaya to Makassar. Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto confirmed that the maritime emergency had been brought under control.

This high-level meeting marked Prime Minister Anutin's first official state visit to Indonesia. Following a private session between the leaders, full delegation talks resulted in the adoption of the Indonesia-Thailand Strategic Partnership Roadmap 2026–2030. This document formalizes a framework for closer bilateral cooperation, building on the enhanced relationship between the two nations, which was elevated to a strategic partnership in 2025.
