Prabowo, U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN Discuss Indonesia-U.S. Cooperation

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN Kevin Kim at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, on Saturday, in a meeting Jakarta described as warm and constructive.

The discussions focused on cooperation between Indonesia and the United States, as well as issues affecting the wider region. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said the meeting addressed efforts to strengthen bilateral ties, promote regional stability and build relations based on mutual respect and equal partnership.

The United States has not yet appointed a permanent ambassador to Indonesia. That leaves the U.S. ambassador to ASEAN as the most senior U.S. government official representing Washington in Jakarta. U.S. Charge d’Affaires ad Interim for ASEAN Joy M. Sakurai also attended the meeting.

The meeting also discussed various efforts to enhance cooperation between the two countries, including promoting cooperation and stability in the region and strengthening relations between the two countries based on the principles of mutual respect and equal partnership.

Foreign Minister Sugiono and State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi joined Prabowo and Teddy. Teddy said the meeting was expected to reinforce the foundation of Indonesia-U.S. relations and encourage closer, constructive and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries and across the region.

Prabowo is scheduled to leave for the United Nations headquarters in New York in the fourth week of September to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly. The Palace and Cabinet Secretariat have not yet confirmed whether he will attend the annual event.
