Premier League Clubs Set Summer Transfer Spending Record at £3.41 Billion

Premier League clubs have broken the summer transfer spending record for the second year in a row, committing £3.41 billion to new players.

The figure, based on data from FootballTransfers.com founder Paul Macdonald and cited by BBC Sport, exceeds last year’s record of £3.14 billion. It is also more than three times the £1.13 billion spent by English clubs five years ago.

Spending crossed the £3 billion mark after Manchester City completed the signing of Iliman Ndiaye from Everton on the final day of the window for an initial £60 million. Soon after the window closed, Chelsea’s £125 million transfer of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City was also confirmed.

Fernandez’s move ranked as the summer’s biggest deal. Manchester City had already paid £116 million for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, while Chelsea spent £117 million to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Liverpool paid £106 million for Paris Saint-Germain and France forward Bradley Barcola, with the fee potentially rising to £123 million.

Tottenham Hotspur also featured prominently among the large deals, signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a fee that could reach £100 million. The London club paid £85 million for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and £75 million for Savio from Manchester City, with that deal potentially rising to £85 million. Three of football’s 10 most expensive transfers took place during the summer, all involving Premier League clubs.
