As Kyrgyzstan prepares for the new academic year, over 136,000 children are set to enter first grade, prompting families to begin their back-to-school shopping. A survey of local markets and stores reveals the costs associated with equipping students for their educational journey.

Specialists emphasize the importance of choosing a quality backpack that supports a child's health. According to sanitary norms, a backpack without books for first to fourth graders should not exceed 700 grams. While weighing options might be impractical, parents are advised to consider the child's height and age, avoiding oversized bags that could lead to spinal issues. Basic backpacks are available from 850 som, with orthopedic models priced higher, starting at 1,300 to 1,500 som. Branded options can be even more expensive.

Stationery costs add another significant expense. A pack of ten thin notebooks costs around 6 som, with covers for notebooks starting at 5 som and textbook covers at 20 som. Older students may need larger notebooks, priced from 40 som for a 48-page version. Pencil cases range widely from 100 som to over 500 som, depending on size and compartments. Pens cost from 5-10 som upwards, with a specific requirement for green ink pens in some primary grades. Pencils are similarly priced, starting at 5 som.

For younger students, additional supplies include sketchpads (from 80 som), gouache paints (from 150 som), watercolor paints (from 100 som), plasticine (150 som), glue (from 30 som), colored paper (from 50 som), erasers (around 20 som), colored pencils (from 150 som), sharpeners (from 20 som), paintbrushes (from 60 som for a set), scissors (from 50 som), rulers (from 20 som), and book stands (from 100 som).

While diaries are less common due to the shift to electronic systems, some classes still require them. Other optional items include folders for notebooks and art, a modeling board, an apron with sleeves, and markers, depending on teacher requirements. A standard set of supplies for a younger student, comprising notebooks, pens, pencils, a pencil case, art supplies, and other essentials, is estimated to cost around 1,500 som.
