President Questions Possible Party Consulting by Election Commission Member

Lithuania’s president has questioned whether Electoral Commission member Laura Matjošaitytė should have advised the Nemunas Dawn party before joining the commission.

Matjošaitytė may have consulted the party on membership-fee issues and helped prepare its response to the Electoral Commission. She later became a member of the commission, but did not publicly disclose the services or withdraw from discussions involving related matters.

She has not said whether the party paid her, citing attorney-client confidentiality. The Electoral Commission said the party’s financial documents do not list the expenses.

The Chief Official Ethics Commission has received a complaint and will decide whether to open an investigation. The Justice Ministry said the situation should be assessed by that body, while the speaker of Parliament ordered officials to gather more information. The president said the information raised doubts and needed evaluation.
