Preveli: Eight More People Rescued Under Difficult Conditions

A new sea rescue operation has concluded in Preveli, Rethymno, Crete, successfully evacuating eight more individuals from perilous conditions. This brings the total number of people rescued by sea to 59. The operation involved a Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boat, which transported the individuals to the port of Agia Galini.

Earlier, 51 people had already been evacuated from the same coastal area. Their initial evacuation was prompted by a fire that ignited in the "Asomatos" region, necessitating their removal from the sea. The challenging weather, characterized by strong northern winds reaching 8 Beaufort, significantly hampered the efforts of the rescue teams.

All 51 individuals initially rescued are also safe at the port of Agia Galini and are reported to be in good health. The Hellenic Coast Guard and a Frontex vessel remain in the maritime area.
