Preventing damage: Many overlook this car part, which can be seriously harmed by summer heat

Extreme summer heat poses a significant threat to car tires, particularly for vehicles that remain stationary for extended durations. While new cars undergo rigorous testing for high-temperature resilience, older vehicles show more pronounced effects of sun and heat exposure, especially on plastic and rubber components.

The primary concern highlighted by HAK (Croatian Automobile Club) relates to car tires. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation and high temperatures can cause the oils within the rubber to dry out, rendering the tires brittle. This makes them susceptible to cracking or even sudden blowouts while driving. Visible signs like small cracks on the sidewalls or tread indicate an increased risk.

A condition known as "dry rot" is most common in vehicles that are not used frequently. Experts emphasize the critical importance of regular tire pressure checks, at least once a month, as both under-inflation and over-inflation accelerate tire wear. To further protect tires, parking in shaded areas whenever possible is recommended to reduce direct sun exposure and overheating.

Additional protective measures include covering tires with materials like cardboard or fabric. Specialized tire care products can also slow down drying and extend tire lifespan. These steps are crucial for maintaining tire integrity and ensuring driving safety during hot weather.
