Prevention, Air Fleets, Insurance: Ecolo Presents a Plan Against Forest Fires: 'The Sense of Urgency Does Not Drive Our Governments'

With over 160,000 hectares already consumed by flames across Europe since June 21, the Belgian Green party Ecolo has unveiled a comprehensive plan to address the escalating threat of forest fires. The party argues that a critical lack of urgency pervades governmental responses at federal, regional, and European levels, despite the evident link between climate change and the increasing frequency and intensity of such disasters.

This massive destruction of biodiversity, the consequences for human beings, the destruction of houses, the polluted air... the increase in all these phenomena is linked to climate change.

Gilles Vanden Burre, co-president of Ecolo, highlighted the devastating consequences of these fires, including massive biodiversity loss, threats to human life, destruction of homes, and severe air pollution. He expressed bewilderment at the absence of a strong sense of urgency from policymakers, contrasting it with the swift financial mobilization seen during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic or the war in Ukraine.

Ecolo's plan is built on four key pillars: bolstering emergency response capabilities, enhancing financial safeguards for citizens impacted by fires, adapting urban planning and construction practices to be more fire-resistant, and increasing the resilience of forests and ecosystems. The party specifically criticizes the federal government's substantial investment in defense while allocating minimal resources to protect the population from climate-related threats like wildfires.

And honestly, I cannot explain why we do not have this sense of urgency.

To strengthen firefighting efforts, Ecolo advocates for the urgent recruitment of more firefighters, improved equipment, and increased funding for the Civil Protection. They also propose creating a cadastre of high-risk zones and collaborating with the Netherlands and Luxembourg to establish a joint aerial firefighting fleet. The party believes mapping fire risks more effectively could prevent certain areas from becoming uninsurable due to climate change, ensuring victims receive full compensation for disaster-related damages.
