PRI denounces Morena's early campaigning for 2027 elections, urges INE review

Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) has formally accused the ruling Morena party of conducting early election campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections. The PRI argues that Morena's internal processes for selecting candidates, termed "coordinators for the defense of the transformation," have become a political promotion strategy outside legal timelines.

PRI Senator Manuel Añorve Baños stated that Morena's aspirants in 17 states with upcoming elections are already engaged in public positioning, image promotion, and voter outreach. He criticized the National Electoral Institute (INE) for its perceived inaction, urging it to intervene and investigate whether these activities violate electoral regulations. Añorve questioned the electoral referee's role, suggesting authorities should not be passive in the face of potential misuse of resources to boost candidacies before the formal start of electoral processes.

The PRI alleges that Morena and its candidates are acting with impunity, leveraging their influence over state institutions to gain an advantage over other political forces. Añorve cited documented cases in states like Guerrero, Colima, and Chihuahua, where Morena profiles have allegedly undertaken promotional activities with considerable expense. The PRI has submitted complaints, asserting it possesses evidence of these premature campaign acts and demanding the INE impose sanctions to prevent Morena aspirants from gaining an unfair advantage.
