Prison service reform in Lithuania carried out coercively, says politician

A reform within Lithuania's prison service is reportedly being implemented under duress, according to politician R. Tamašunienė. The ongoing restructuring involves the reassignment of officers from Security Management departments to Resocialization departments.

During a press conference, Tamašunienė voiced concerns after receiving reports that the transition is being conducted coercively. "Can such a reform be carried out? Of course, yes. We certainly support the goal – that resocialization is very important in the execution of punishments," she stated.

However, Tamašunienė firmly opposed the method of implementation. "But we have received such reports, we have actually learned that this reform is being carried out coercively. We do not support that in any way. Officers cannot be transferred from one position to another without their agreement," she explained, highlighting the principle that personnel changes should be consensual.
