Prithvi Highway remains blocked by flood debris

The Prithvi Highway, a crucial artery connecting Kathmandu with Muglin and Narayangadh, remains impassable following a severe flood in the Bhotekoshi River. The deluge swept substantial mud and debris onto the road, causing obstructions in the Galchhi and Gajuri rural municipalities.

Traffic police superintendent Dilli Narayan Pandey reported that debris still needs clearing from three distinct locations: two in Gajuri Rural Municipality and one in Galchhi Rural Municipality. Specifically, mud has accumulated at Galoudi and Bahuni Bhir in Gajuri-5, and at Mahesh Dobhan in Galchhi Rural Municipality.

There are settlements where the mud has accumulated on the road. The deposited mud has to be removed and transported elsewhere, which has caused the delay.

Authorities have deployed heavy machinery in an effort to remove the mud and reopen the highway. However, the cleanup operation is proving to be time-consuming. Pandey explained that the presence of settlements near the affected road sections complicates the process, as the deposited mud must be carefully removed and transported elsewhere.

Access to Bahuni Bhir in Gajuri-5 remains a challenge, with work only able to commence once the debris at Galoudi and Mahesh Dobhan is cleared. Despite these difficulties, officials are striving to reopen the highway by the end of Friday.
