Proceedings: Farmer on trial for wife's murder

A 56-year-old farmer from the Uelzen district faces charges of murder and attempted aggravated suicide as his trial begins at the Lüneburg Regional Court.

The prosecution alleges that the farmer killed his wife and then severely injured their two sons following an argument at their farm in Eimke, Lüneburg Heath, on February 25. Police initially characterized the incident as an attempted "extended suicide."

To ascertain the defendant's mental state at the time of the alleged offenses, the court has appointed three expert witnesses. Their findings will be crucial in determining whether the accused was suffering from a mental impairment that could have influenced his actions.
