Prophet's Guidance on Repeated Marital Relations: Perform Ablution

Islamic teachings, as narrated through authentic hadiths, recommend that Muslims perform ablution (wudu) if they intend to engage in marital relations more than once on the same night. This practice is also advised before sleeping when in a state of janabah (ritual impurity after intercourse).

Scholars have elaborated on the wisdom and legal rulings behind this recommendation. Alauddin Ali bin Balban Al Farisi, in his work Shahih Ibnu Ibban, explains a hadith detailing the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) guidance on this matter. The hadith, narrated by Abu Sa'id Al Khudri, states: "If one of you has intercourse with his wife, and then wishes to repeat it, he should perform ablution."

Another narration, found in the collections of Imam Al-Bukhari and Muslim, further clarifies the benefit of this practice. It suggests that performing ablution before repeating intercourse provides greater refreshment. Abu Hatim noted that this specific clarification about refreshment was unique to the narration by Muslim bin Ibrahim.
