Prosecutor beaten after defending woman; two arrested in Poland

A prosecutor in Radom, Poland, was brutally beaten after intervening in a disturbance at a local establishment, leading to the arrest and three-month detention of two suspects. The incident occurred during the night of July 25-26.

The District Court in Radom has temporarily detained Konstanty B. and Ernest G. for three months.

According to Aneta Góźdź, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Radom, the two suspects, Ernest G. (32) and Konstanty B. (27), were allegedly causing disorder, provoking fights, and harassing patrons. At one point, Konstanty B. allegedly punched a man and then struck a woman on the back of the head. The prosecutor, off-duty at the time, attempted to de-escalate the situation and restore order.

The grounds for temporary detention included the fear of tampering with evidence by the suspects, who claimed memory loss regarding the course of events, as well as the fear of escape and hiding.

In response, both suspects reportedly attacked the prosecutor, knocking him to the ground and repeatedly striking and kicking him. Investigators believe the prosecutor acted in self-defense, protecting the woman and public order, thus qualifying for legal protection afforded to public officials. Police were called to the scene, and the intoxicated suspects were apprehended shortly after.

In the court's assessment, the behavior of both suspects was highly reprehensible.

The beaten prosecutor sustained head injuries and was transported to the hospital. Both suspects have been charged with participating in the assault and endangering the victim's health, actions deemed to show a blatant disregard for the legal order. Ernest G. admitted to the assault, citing drunkenness and partial memory loss, and expressed regret. Konstanty B. denied the charges, claiming no memory of the events.

Seeing the aggressors' behavior, including towards the attacked woman, the prosecutor present in the establishment outside of duty undertook an intervention, calling on the attackers to maintain order.
