Prosecutors Call Sartor Case a 'Fraud of Great Proportions' Involving $200 Million

Chilean prosecutors are investigating the "Sartor case" as a massive fraud, potentially one of the most significant in the country's recent history. The investigation targets a multi-year operation involving numerous individuals and impacting both private citizens and corporations.

Chief Prosecutor Felipe Sepúlveda stated that the fraud involves approximately $200 million, based on preliminary findings. Regional Prosecutor Lorena Parra highlighted the substantial financial scale of the case, noting that the initial formalization alone covers operations exceeding 100 billion pesos. The court has acknowledged the alleged crimes of disloyal administration, providing false information, incompatible negotiation, money laundering, and fraud by omission of OPA for the purpose of precautionary measures.

Following the court's decision, Michael Clark Varela, Pedro Pablo Larraín Mery, Carlos Emilio Larraín Mery, and Sergio Samuel Yáñez Astete were remanded in custody. Rodrigo Eduardo Bustamante García and Juan Carlos Jorquera Salas were placed under partial house arrest. The court deemed Clark and Pedro Pablo Larraín a flight risk, posing a danger to the investigation's success.

Sepúlveda affirmed that the judicial decision validates the prosecution's evidence and that further investigative steps are underway. The Public Ministry aims to conclude these actions within a reasonable timeframe to proceed with the indictment and trial. The court's acceptance of the charges, particularly for precautionary measures, underscores the strength of the prosecution's case.
