Prosecutors’ preliminary theory on Hugo Javier’s injuries

Paraguayan prosecutors say former Central governor Hugo Javier González most likely suffered his serious injuries in an accidental fall in the bathroom of his prison cell, but they have not closed the door on an assault or another contributing factor.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office presented its preliminary findings after González was taken from the Industrial Penitentiary Unit La Esperanza to a hospital on Sunday night. His cellmate alerted prison guards after finding the former politician unconscious following the fall.

González was first taken to the Hospital General de Barrio Obrero in Asunción and later transferred to the National Hospital of Itauguá. Doctors there determined that he had suffered a stroke, and he remains in intensive care.

In a statement, prosecutors cited the cell’s poor lighting and the absence of defensive wounds as factors supporting the accidental-fall theory. They stressed, however, that the investigation continues and that they “do not rule out other hypotheses that may emerge” as inquiries advance. The authorities said further steps would seek to clarify exactly what happened and determine whether another factor contributed to the incident.

The National Hospital reported that González is stable but still in danger. He is serving a prison sentence after being convicted of diverting public funds.
