Protected Oak Tree Falls on House in Varėna District During Storm

A protected oak tree collapsed onto a house in Lithuania's Varėna district during a storm, causing significant damage to the roof.

The homeowner's granddaughter, Dovilė, reported that her grandparents, who live in the affected house, had expressed concerns about the tree's condition multiple times. They had contacted the local administration and sent photos, requesting an assessment of the danger posed by the tree.

Despite these warnings, authorities decided to await an expert conclusion from an arborist. However, before that could happen, the tree fell, crushing the roof of the house. Police and firefighters responded to the scene.

Dovilė stated that her grandmother was inside the house at the time of the incident but managed to retreat and secure the door. "Fortunately, people were not hurt, but the consequences could have been tragic," she said, sharing photos of the damaged house.

The incident occurred amidst changing weather patterns in Lithuania. Forecasters predicted summer rain and thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging from 20-25 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Cooler weather was expected early in the week, with a possibility of rain continuing in western and southwestern regions.
