Protest at Attorney General's Office Turns Violent, Demands Arrest of Former Official

A protest by the National Legal Intellectuals Network (JIHN) outside the Attorney General's Office in South Jakarta erupted into chaos on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. The demonstration, which began peacefully with speeches, intensified after protesters burned a banner, prompting police to intervene. Chants of "This is the fire of our resistance, friends!" were heard as police moved to extinguish the burning banner, creating a plume of smoke. This action led to several instances of pushing between the protesters and the security forces. The demonstrators' primary demand was for concrete action in the case involving the former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes, Febrie Adriansyah, specifically calling for his arrest and detention. Protesters argued that evidence of Adriansyah's involvement in criminal acts is clear, yet the Attorney General's Office has not apprehended him. "How far has the Febrie Adriansyah case progressed? What has the Attorney General's Office done in investigating its former leader?" one orator questioned, also challenging the courage of Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin. Previously, the National Police's Directorate for Corruption Crimes (Kortastipidkor Polri) had named Febrie Adriansyah a suspect in a corruption case related to PT Asabri. Police had searched numerous locations connected to the PT Asabri case and two others, eventually handing over the investigation to the Attorney General's Office. During a search of Adriansyah's home in Sentul, Bogor, police seized assets valued at approximately Rp 476 billion, including 74 kilograms of gold and significant amounts of foreign currency and cash, which were found in a safe. These assets were not listed in Adriansyah's wealth report (LHKPN).
