Protesters demand probe into leader's death, allege police role

Relatives and local residents besieged Pirgachha Police Station in Rangpur on Saturday, protesting the death of Chhatra Dal leader Monowarul Islam Bokshi. They allege police involvement in his death in Savar, Dhaka, and demand a fair investigation and punishment for those responsible.

We want a fair investigation to determine how Monowarul died and who was involved. The actual perpetrators must be brought to justice, while innocent people should not be harassed.

Bokshi, 29, vice-president of the Savar unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), died after falling from the rooftop of a residential building during a police operation at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) in Savar early Friday. He was the son of a BPATC security guard and lived with his father at the BPATC Staff Quarters.

Officers from Pirgachha Police Station, assisted by Savar police, raided Bokshi's father's flat while searching for a missing teenage girl and her companion. Witnesses reported that an ambulance carrying Bokshi's body arrived at the police station premises on Saturday morning, after which relatives and locals staged a protest with the body, blocking the road in front of the station.

Mofasirul Islam, member secretary of Pirgachha upazila JCD, stated, "We want a fair investigation to determine how Monowarul died and who was involved. The actual perpetrators must be brought to justice, while innocent people should not be harassed." Aminul Islam Ranga, president of Pirgachha upazila BNP, added that the circumstances of the fall and any police involvement would become clear after the autopsy and investigation reports.

We are preparing to file a case with Savar Model Police Station.

Mamdel Hossain Bokshi, the deceased's brother, alleged that the missing girl's father, accompanied by someone in a police uniform, went to Savar to rescue his daughter. He claimed they were told to take Monowarul to the hospital quickly but could not save him. The family is preparing to file a case at Savar Model Police Station and demands an impartial investigation and exemplary punishment for anyone found responsible, including police personnel. Selim Malik, officer-in-charge of Pirgachha Police Station, advised the relatives to file a case, stating that the actual circumstances would emerge through investigation.
