Protesters demand reform at Central Java Governor's Office

Students gathered in front of the Central Java Governor's Office on Monday afternoon, June 15, 2026, repeatedly chanting "Reformasi" (Reform). Orators from a command vehicle led the chants, met with resounding agreement from the crowd that filled Jalan Pahlawan, directly in front of the government complex. The protest was reportedly a response to the economic crisis, which the students attributed to the government's performance. One orator emphasized that the action was not instigated or funded by external parties. Protesters voiced criticism regarding several government projects, including the "free nutritious meals" program, the "Merah Putih" cooperative, and increased fuel prices. They demanded government accountability for the weakening Indonesian Rupiah exchange rate. Around 5:30 PM local time, demonstrators set fire to protest materials in front of the Governor's Office gate. Police responded by extinguishing the fire with a water cannon. The protesters began dispersing by 6:00 PM, and one lane of Jalan Pahlawan was closed for the duration of the demonstration.
