Proton-Geely Synergy Strengthens Malaysia's Automotive Ecosystem, Creates Jobs

Malaysia's automotive sector is experiencing a significant boost thanks to the strategic synergy between Proton and Geely. This collaboration has not only strengthened the national ecosystem but also created 9,700 job opportunities, acting as a catalyst for the country's economy. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani highlighted that Proton's vehicle production capacity has now surpassed 150,000 units per year, a testament to the success of this partnership.

"This development serves as an example for foreign automotive manufacturers looking to invest in Malaysia," Johari stated. "We want investors who come to Malaysia to build an ecosystem with local entrepreneurs and component manufacturers so that all parties benefit through job opportunities, profits, and returns for the country."

This emphasis on local integration was further underscored by the launch of the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV, produced through local assembly (CKD). This move signifies Proton's readiness to meet future demand for hybrid technology, which combines internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) capabilities. The PHEV offers a practical range of up to 1,100 kilometers on a single charge and fuel, making advanced technology more accessible to the public.

The partnership's economic impact is substantial, with Proton's tax contributions to the nation reaching RM806 million, encompassing corporate tax, excise duty, and import duty. "An industry that can have a large multiplier effect, but only if everyone has the mindset that we want investors to come into the country and they are willing to cooperate," Johari added. The successful local production of the PHEV demonstrates Proton's commitment to innovation and its role in driving the nation's automotive industry forward.
