Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra to Remember 9/11 with Beethoven and John Williams

The Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra will mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon with a special concert in San Juan this Friday.

Twenty-five years have passed since September 11, but it remains a date in our memory. With this concert we want to honor the victims and offer a space for reflection and unity.

The performance, titled “In Memoriam: September 11,” will take place at the Sala Sinfónica of the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce. Under conductor Maximiano Valdés, the orchestra will present works chosen around memory, reflection and peace.

The program will bring together music by Ludwig van Beethoven, Antonín Dvořák, Samuel Barber, Dmitri Shostakovich, John Williams and Aaron Copland. Soprano Camila Isabel will join the orchestra as a guest artist. Williams’ “A Prayer for Peace” and “The People’s House” will feature alongside Copland’s “Simple Gifts.”

The idea of this concert is to remember the tragedy of September 11 through music that symbolizes the virtues of the human spirit in the face of violence and destruction.

Santana said music can accompany people through difficult moments and carry messages of hope and peace across generations. Valdés said the concert would remember the tragedy through music symbolizing the human spirit’s virtues in the face of violence and destruction. He added that the selected works speak of humanity’s ability to answer adversity with love, hope and solidarity, which he described as the common thread of the program and its tribute to those who died that day.

Each of the works we have selected speaks, from different moments in history, of humanity’s ability to respond to adversity with love, hope and solidarity. That is the meaning that unites this program and the tribute we want to pay to those who died that day.
