Punta del Este to Honor Comedians Espalter and Olmedo with Street Names

Punta del Este is set to honor two beloved comedians, Uruguay's Ricardo Espalter and Argentina's Alberto Olmedo, by naming two access points to the Playa Mansa wooden walkway after them. The Maldonado Departmental Board unanimously approved the initiative, a project jointly supported by the Departmental Executive and the Punta del Este Municipality.

The decision will see Access Parada 1 named after Espalter, a celebrated Uruguayan actor whose work on iconic Rioplatense television shows like Telecataplum and Decalegrón left a foundational mark. Espalter also enjoyed a notable career in Argentina.

Access Parada 3 will be named in memory of Olmedo, the unforgettable humorist from Rosario, Argentina, widely regarded as a pinnacle of Argentine popular culture. Both comedians were known to spend their summers in Punta del Este, with Olmedo's former luxury chalet famously bearing the name "Piluso," a nod to one of his most cherished characters. It was in this chalet that Olmedo, alongside director Hugo Sofovich, would conceive new characters each summer, including the memorable Manosanta.

Espalter passed away in 2007 at the age of 82, while Olmedo died tragically in 1988 after a fall from a building in Mar del Plata.
