Putin says Russia will defeat Ukraine on the battlefield but is ready for peace deal

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Russia is prepared to achieve victory on the battlefield in Ukraine if required, but also expressed readiness to end the conflict through diplomacy. Speaking at the annual economic forum in St. Petersburg, Putin indicated that Russia is open to compromises previously discussed with former US President Donald Trump.

Putin reiterated Russia's stance that Ukraine must cede control of the remaining parts of the Donbas region not currently under Russian control for the war to conclude. He stated that Russia has already gained full control of the Luhansk People's Republic (100%) and occupies over 85% of the Donetsk People's Republic. "We are certainly ready and willing to reach an agreement with Ukraine through peaceful means," Putin said, referencing discussions held with Trump.

The Russian president expressed confidence that Trump's peace proposals could form the basis for an agreement, but noted that Trump still needs to persuade Kyiv. Putin characterized Trump's efforts to resolve the conflict as "sincere."

In a separate statement, Putin revealed that Russia has not yet deployed its hypersonic 'Oreshnik' missile in actual combat conditions. He clarified that the missile has only undergone testing to observe its performance and inform decisions regarding its future large-scale use.
