Qatar PM Meets Iran President in Tehran, Discussing Regional De-escalation

Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on Thursday. The meeting aimed to bolster Doha's diplomatic initiatives focused on de-escalating regional tensions and creating an environment conducive to dialogue.

Discussions between the two leaders centered on regional developments and their impact on security and stability. The Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that both sides explored "ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions and foster a conductive environment for dialogue." The meeting occurred during the Qatari Prime Minister's visit to Tehran, where he also engaged with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials.

Some events occurred that were unacceptable, but we still believe that Iran and Qatar are two countries of friends and brothers and that the issues that have arisen can be resolved through understanding.

President Pezeshkian described Iran and Qatar as "two countries of friends and brothers," despite recent "bitter events." He expressed confidence that issues could be resolved through mutual understanding, stating, "The issues that have arisen can be resolved through understanding." Pezeshkian reiterated Iran's stance against seeking war or conflict expansion, advocating for the resumption of dialogue based on previous understandings.

Logic dictates that the implementation of the memorandum of understanding be resumed in the same manner as before and that issues be resolved through dialogue.

Al Thani conveyed that Qatar's Emir views President Pezeshkian as a "brother" and stressed the enduring respect between Qatar and Iran. He affirmed Doha's commitment to restoring regional stability and expressed readiness to enhance cooperation with Iran. The Qatari Prime Minister emphasized that diplomacy, rationality, and logic, rather than force, are the means to achieve regional stability, security, and economic peace.

The talks between Qatar and Iran are part of a wider diplomatic push concerning the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier on Thursday, Al Thani and Araghchi had discussed a proposed maritime security initiative.
