Qualifications Alone Not Enough for Graduates, Urges Fijian Minister

Graduates from Pacific Polytech are being strongly encouraged to supplement their technical and vocational qualifications with practical work experience to enhance their future employment opportunities. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, Minister for Transport and Public Works, emphasized that while academic certificates are important, employers highly value hands-on experience and a readiness to work.

The Minister advised graduates not to be overly selective about their first job, suggesting they take up available opportunities to build valuable experience. He stated, "With your certificate, you need to complement it. It is very important to have work experience." This approach, he believes, will help graduates move closer to their long-term career goals, even if their initial roles are not their ideal positions.

Fiji continues to grapple with significant skills shortages across various sectors. Minister Tuisawau highlighted the importance of graduates remaining adaptable and committed to continuous skill development to meet these demands. The government is actively working on establishing frameworks to strengthen pathways for technical and vocational graduates, aiming to improve their access to apprenticeships and employment opportunities.
