Quang Ninh football club moves to Can Tho under new name

Quang Ninh football has disappeared from Vietnam’s professional map again. The club will continue in the 2026-27 national first division, but under a new name, Thep Can Tho.

The Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company said on September 4 that Quang Ninh FC had changed its name, logo and home venue. The new club will use Can Tho Stadium for professional national competitions starting this season.

According to Tuoi Tre, Thep Can Tho will initially keep its coaching staff, led by head coach Nguyen Van Dan, as well as the squad registered with the VPF at the start of the season. The entire team is scheduled to travel to Can Tho on September 6 and settle into its new base. The club may later change its administrative structure, coaching staff and playing squad.

For Quang Ninh supporters, the change marks another painful break. Than Quang Ninh, once one of Vietnam’s leading professional clubs from 2016 to 2021, was dissolved in 2021 because of financial difficulties. A new Quang Ninh football company formed in 2024 and rebuilt a team for the province, reviving hopes of a return to the V-League.

Those hopes lasted only a few years. Under Nguyen Van Dan, the club rose two divisions, moving from the third tier to the second and then the first in two seasons. Despite limited funding and a squad without foreign players or elite stars, Quang Ninh finished ninth among 12 teams in the 2025-26 season to retain its place.

Dong Thap has also been transferred to a new operator and renamed Binh Minh Sai Gon FC. It will use Ba Ria and Thong Nhat stadiums as home venues in the 2026-27 season.
