Quito to see high daytime temperatures through Sept. 4 in these areas

Quito is preparing for several days of unusually high daytime temperatures, with some parts of the metropolitan district expected to exceed 27 C through Sept. 4.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, known by its Spanish acronym Inamhi, has kept Meteorological Warning No. 65 in force. The warning applies from 10 a.m. on Sept. 1 until 5 p.m. on Sept. 4, according to Quito’s Metropolitan Emergency Operations Committee.

The hottest areas are expected to include Guayllabamba and Cumbayá in the Tumbaco zonal administration, along with Calderón, Nayón and Zámbiza. Temperatures of 24 to 26 C are forecast for Tababela, Puembo, Tumbaco, Cumbayá, Guangopolo, Conocoto, Alangasí and Pomasqui. Other sectors are expected to record between 21 and 23 C.

Inamhi also warned that the conditions could encourage the spread of forest fires. Authorities asked residents to reduce strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours, avoid direct sun, drink water and keep rooms cool and ventilated. In rural and forested areas, they urged people not to create flames or sparks and not to throw away cigarette butts or lit matches. Any forest fire should be reported immediately to the authorities. The Municipality of Quito said it would continue monitoring weather conditions and the areas with high and very high temperatures.
