Rachmat Gobel, Businessman and DPR Member, Dies at 63

Rachmat Gobel, a distinguished figure in Indonesian business and politics, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the age of 63. His death was announced by the Secretary General of the NasDem Party, Hermawi Taslim, and confirmed on his personal Instagram account. Gobel died at Brawijaya Hospital in South Jakarta.

Gobel, born in Gorontalo on September 3, 1962, hailed from a business family and was groomed from a young age to lead the Gobel Business Group, founded by his parents. He earned a bachelor's degree in International Trade from Chuo University in Tokyo in 1987 and completed an internship at Matsushita Group. By 27, he had returned to Jakarta to join the family enterprise.

His political career included a significant appointment as Minister of Trade by President Joko Widodo in 2014. He also served as the President's Special Envoy to Japan from 2017 to 2019. In the DPR, he held the position of Deputy Speaker for the NasDem Faction during the 2019-2024 term and was slated to chair the Commission VI Faction Group for the 2024-2029 period. Gobel also held directorial and commissioner roles in various prominent companies, including PT Global International, PT Panasonic Gobel Indonesia, and PT Visi Media Asia.
