Racist abuse spurred Suzuki as Japan goalkeeper set for EPL

Zion Suzuki is set to become the most expensive Japanese goalkeeper in history, joining Premier League club Aston Villa for a fee potentially reaching 35 million euros ($40 million). The 23-year-old's journey to this point has been marked by significant challenges, including costly errors and racist abuse.

Born in New Jersey to a Ghanaian father and a Japanese mother, Suzuki moved to Japan at a young age and progressed through the Japanese football system. After spells in Belgium and Italy, he has earned 28 caps for his country. His transfer to Villa, where he is expected to sign a five-year contract, comes amid speculation that current first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez might depart.

Suzuki, who previously attracted interest from Manchester United and was reportedly close to joining Paris Saint-Germain, believes he possesses the necessary skills for the Premier League. His career has seen him rise through the ranks at Urawa Reds and make his international debut early. After moving to Sint-Truiden in Belgium for more first-team experience, he became Japan's number one for the 2024 Asian Cup. Despite a difficult tournament with some blunders that led to online racial abuse after a defeat to Iraq, Suzuki vowed not to be beaten by the abuse, stating, "I’m not about to let it beat me. I want to come back at them by producing good results."

Suzuki continued as Japan's first-choice keeper, later moving to Parma in 2024, becoming the first Japanese goalkeeper in Italy's Serie A. Known for his 6ft 3ins frame, his teammates called him "animale." Despite a broken hand in late 2025, he returned for the World Cup, impressing as Japan reached the last 32, before being eliminated by Brazil.
